In February 2023, the Dying to Know Expo returned to Esperance, bringing important conversations about aging, death, and care into the open. Held at the Esperance Senior Citizens Centre, the event was a community-led initiative facilitated by Sue Starr and supported through a grant from the Esperance Community Advisory Committee (ECAC), a local funding stream of the Mt Burdett Foundation.
The Dying to Know Expo originated in 2022, the result of discussions at the local Esperance Death Cafe, with community members expressing a growing concern around the prevalence of dementia and a desire for better understanding and preparation of end-of-life issues. The 2022 event attracted over 100 attendees and highlighted the community's need for honest, compassionate, and practical information.
Building on the momentum of the original event, the 2023 Expo featured a full day of engaging sessions including:
Funeral planning and preparation with Heather James, Tanya Rogers, and Sue Starr;
Understanding and managing dementia and Parkinson’s with Marcella Sharry;
Proactive health management with Ali Hooper;
The role of compassionate communities with Meredith Waters; and
Advanced care planning and health directives with Irene Montefiore.
Each session was followed by a Q&A, allowing attendees the opportunity to engage directly with the speakers.
The 2023 Expo innovated further by filming all sessions, made possible by the Mt Burdett Foundation grant. Filmmaker Dave Riggs (Riggs Australia) helped to make sure these important conversations were captured and made accessible to those unable to attend in person. The recordings have ensured that critical information about aging, dementia, and death continues to reach more people throughout the region and beyond.
The Dying to Know Expo aligns closely with the Mt Burdett Foundation’s commitment to healthcare, education, and community capacity-building. By encouraging open dialogue and providing accessible resources, the event helped build a more compassionate, informed and connected community.
