In a powerful step toward strengthening community leadership and long-term regional resilience, the Rural and Regional Advancement Foundation (RRAF) is proud to support an exciting new project led by Stirlings to Coast Farmers, Skills, Tools & Confidence for Young Farmers in Leadership Roles.

The 18-month program began in February 2025 and is designed to equip young farmers and agricultural workers in the Albany, Plantagenet and Cranbrook regions with the practical knowledge, leadership skills and confidence needed to shape the future of their communities.

With many longstanding community leaders in rural WA stepping back from active roles, there’s an urgent need to empower the next generation to step up. However, young farmers often face high demands on their time, limited resources, and a lack of targeted training that blends practical business acumen with leadership development. That’s where this initiative steps in, offering not only vital skills but also space for connection, confidence-building and mentorship.

Aimed at young people under 35 (including at least seven active farmers), the program will deliver a rich mix of training and personal development opportunities spaced across the 18-month period:

  • Financial literacy sessions delivered by Successiv and Smith Thornton Accountants

  • Life and business coaching tailored for agriculture by Farm Owners Academy

  • Governance training via the AICD Governance Essentials course

  • Public speaking coaching with Bluesee Pty Ltd (Esther Price)

  • A WA-based two-night study tour to meet and learn from influential leaders in the agricultural sector

Each session will include a social component, such as group dinners, to build camaraderie among participants and encourage peer support, making the experience more than just training, it’s a community in itself.

By the program’s conclusion in July 2026, the goals are clear:

  • At least 10 young participants will have the confidence and skills to take on a leadership role in their community—on boards, committees, or sporting and service groups.

  • Participants will develop better work/life balance and business management strategies, freeing up time and energy to contribute meaningfully to community life.

  • Stronger networks and peer connections will be forged, ensuring long-lasting relationships and a more cohesive next generation of rural leaders.

Stirlings to Coast Farmers has a strong track record of delivering successful community-building and capacity-building initiatives. With a team of experienced staff, solid partnerships with local organisations, and deep ties to the farming community, they are well-placed to bring this vision to life.

The Mt Burdett Foundation is committed to supporting projects that build leadership, resilience, and capacity in regional and rural WA.
