The Cannery Arts Centre in Esperance has launched a vibrant new addition to the regions creative landscape - The Cannery Shop, a high-quality, dedicated retail space for local artists and markers. With support from the Esperance Community Advisory Committee (ECAC), this exciting initiative will deliver long-term economic and cultural benefits to both creatives and the wider community.
Informed by a newly developed strategic plan, the Cannery Shop project aims to enhance the Centre’s financial self-sufficiency while strengthening opportunities for local creatives. The shop will showcase and sell work by Esperance and surrounding region artists, providing them with a professional platform for ongoing exposure and income.
The space will be open during standard office hours and weekends, supported by a new weekend staff role funded by the Cannery itself. The Mt Burdett Foundation’s contribution has assisted in purchasing shop furnishings and equipment, with careful consideration to preserve the Cannery’s heritage-listed building.
Designed with care and creativity, the Cannery Shop features:
Freestanding, safe and heritage-appropriate display furnishings
A curated selection of high-quality, locally made arts and crafts
An on-site gallery greeter and sales assistant to enhance visitor experience
With a strong focus on professionalism and presentation, the shop also supports First Nations artists and fosters new partnerships throughout the region.
The Cannery Shop addresses a real and growing need in the Esperance region: a visible, accessible outlet for small-scale local makers and artists to sell their work consistently. Beyond economic benefits, the project is about identity, culture and pride—offering both locals and visitors a deeper connection to the stories and creativity of the region.
“The arts communicate our sense of place and ideals,” says Tammy Andrews, Chairperson of the Cannery Arts Centre. “This project will create tangible opportunities for our community’s artists while helping sustain the Cannery’s role as a cultural hub.”
