GIWA Student Sponsorship — GRDC Grains Research Updates
Connecting the Next Generation with WA’s Grains Industry
One hundred tertiary students had the opportunity to connect with researchers, industry leaders and potential employers at the 2026 GRDC Grains Research Updates in Perth, thanks to ongoing support from the Mt Burdett Foundation.
Through a Foundation grant, the Grain Industry Association of Western Australia (GIWA) provided 100 students with free access to Day One of the event.Interest was strong, with more than 170 students expressing interest in the available places. Additional sponsorship from DPIRD helped extend the opportunity to even more emerging agricultural professionals.
A dedicated student breakfast, supported by SPAA and WAARC, gave attendees the chance to meet industry professionals and hear from a panel of early-career agriculture workers about their experiences and pathways into the sector.Throughout the day, students wore dedicated black lanyards, making it easier for industry attendees to identify and engage with them across more than 20 exhibition booths and at the Day One networking sundowner.
The initiative is continuing to evolve based on student feedback. For 2027, GIWA plans to introduce brighter lanyards and is exploring a mentoring program to make it even easier for students to build meaningful industry connections.GIWA is now exploring additional co-sponsors to help continue growing the student program in 2027.
With its strong agricultural roots, the Mt Burdett Foundation recognises the importance of investing in the next generation of people who will shape the future of regional WA.
By giving tertiary students direct access to researchers, employers, mentors and career pathways, the GIWA student sponsorship helps build industry knowledge and professional networks at an important stage in their careers.
